Behavioural interview questions: how to choose better examples
Behavioural questions start with “Tell me about a time…” because interviewers want evidence from your past choices. Your job is to make the evidence easy to hear, even if your experience comes from university or part-time work.
Questions worth preparing first
You do not need a separate story for every question. Three to five flexible examples are enough if each one has a different strength: collaboration, initiative, problem-solving, resilience, and communication.
- Tell me about a time you solved a problem.
- Describe a time you received difficult feedback.
- Give an example of working with different people or priorities.
- Tell me about a time something did not go to plan.
- Describe a time you took initiative without being asked.
Choose examples with a decision in them
The best story is not necessarily the biggest achievement. It is one where you had to decide, adapt, communicate, or take responsibility. Those moments give you something specific to explain in the Action section.
For students, examples can come from a group assignment, a society event, a customer-facing job, sport, family responsibility, or a volunteer role. Choose the example that makes the skill visible.
- A clear problem or objective.
- A choice you personally made.
- A result, even if the result was a lesson.
- A connection to the role's priorities.
Prepare for the follow-up
Strong interviewers often ask what you would do differently, how others reacted, or how you measured the outcome. Do not treat the follow-up as a trap. It is an opportunity to show reflection and self-awareness.

- What did you learn?
- What would you change next time?
- How did you know your approach worked?
