Graduate job interview questions: what to expect
Graduate interviewers do not expect years of full-time experience. They do expect clear motivation, self-awareness, and evidence that you can learn, collaborate, and take responsibility.
The questions graduate interviewers ask most
Most questions fall into a few predictable themes. Prepare one example for each theme from coursework, placements, internships, part-time work, volunteering, sport, or student societies.
- Why this company and this graduate role?
- Tell me about a time you worked in a team.
- Describe a setback or difficult feedback.
- What are your strengths and what are you working on?
- Tell me about a project you are proud of.
- What do you want to learn in your first year?
How to use limited experience well
Do not apologise for being early in your career. Instead, choose examples that show the transferable skill the role requires: planning, analysis, communication, initiative, customer focus, or learning quickly.
A university project can be a strong example if you explain the problem, the part you owned, and what happened. The title of the activity matters less than the evidence in the story.
- Name the skill before the story: “This showed me how I handle deadlines.”
- Explain your individual contribution.
- Give a result or what you changed afterwards.
- Connect the learning back to the role.
Questions to ask at the end
The best closing questions help you decide whether the role is right for you while showing that you have thought beyond the job title. Skip questions that the company website already answers.
- What does a strong first six months look like in this role?
- What kind of work does a graduate take ownership of early?
- How does the team give feedback and support development?
- What tends to make someone successful on this team?
