Practise your ‘Tell me about yourself’ interview answer
‘Tell me about yourself’ is the first chance to show the interviewer a relevant version of your story. A good answer is short, clear, and points naturally toward the role you are discussing.
Practice one interview freeUse present, past, and future
Start with where you are now, use one or two relevant experiences to explain how you got here, and finish with why this opportunity makes sense as your next step.
This structure stops the answer becoming a life story. It also makes it easy for a student or graduate to connect a degree, project, placement, or part-time role to the job ahead.
- Present: what you are focused on now.
- Past: the experience that built a relevant strength.
- Future: why this role is the logical next move.
Keep the first version to one minute
A concise answer sounds more confident than a long answer that needs rescuing. You can add detail after a follow-up, but the first version should give the interviewer a clear reason to ask one.
Say the answer out loud. If it sounds like you are reading your CV, remove the details that do not help the interviewer understand your direction or motivation.
- Do not repeat your name or every line of your CV.
- Use one concrete example instead of three broad claims.
- End by connecting your story to the role.
