Prepare for your first job interview
A first job interview can feel high-stakes because every question is new. The good news is that most interviewers are looking for a clear, thoughtful answer rather than a long employment history.
Practice one interview freeWhat interviewers usually want to hear
For an entry-level role, interviewers are often testing whether you understand the role, communicate clearly, and can bring evidence of reliability, curiosity, and teamwork.
They do not need every answer to come from a formal job. They need to understand what you did, why you made a choice, and what you learned from the outcome.
- Why this role and company?
- Tell me about a time you handled responsibility.
- How do you work with other people?
- What would you like to learn in your first role?
Prepare a calm opening before anything else
The opening questions set the pace. A short answer to ‘Tell me about yourself’ and a genuine reason for applying give you something solid to return to when nerves make the rest feel rushed.
Try saying both answers aloud before you prepare the rest of the question bank. If they sound like a list from your CV, trim them until the story points naturally toward this role.
- Keep your opening answer to about 60 seconds.
- Use one relevant experience, not your whole history.
- End by explaining why this role is the sensible next step.
